Kivitii

Our café is in Luhamaa, in a nulk (district or village group), that is separate from the rest of Setomaa, along the historical Riga-Pskov Stone Road. The visitors first found their way to us on Pop-up Café Day a year ago. We served them lamb roasted in the ground. This was our first foray into pit barbecue cookery, but the result was superb!

This time as well, we aim to serve the same Kivitee Classic dish – pit roasted lamb. We could take an easier path, like oven-roasting, but it’s not the same. Like food is supposed to be enjoyment for the eater, so is preparing it. We enjoy the process itself and then once again, vicariously, as you eat.
Preparing the meat, heating the pit, lowering the pieces of meat on to the stones, the wait, the suspense… We add vegetables grown in the Setomaa summer sun and then we’re ready for your arrival. Simple, mysterious and authentic. Like Setomaa itself!
Breaded and fried Brie-style goat’s milk cheese from Andri-Peedo Goat Farm, served with summer berries, was another visitor favourite last year.
Music to complement the atmosphere at Kivitii will be played by Matis Leima, a musician and composer from Luhamaa.

We will open at midday on 15 August to open the fire pit and then see and taste how it turned out.

See you at Kivitii!
