Those of you with grandmothers in the countryside, do you recall how appetizing and sweet everything smelled and tasted in the summertime? Have you perchance found yourself dreaming of sitting on the steps of the old granary or in the shade of the apple tree to forget your worldly cares and go back to the romantic childhood if only for a second?
Many childhoods were spent at our great-grandparents’ farm in Litvina Village, which later was abandoned.
On Pop-Up Café Day, the women who still have a bright memory of the tastes and smells of their grandmother’s kitchen try to rekindle those experiences.
Our forebears kept the food in the food storehouse, hence the name of the café. The storehouse ready by Pop-Up Café Day is imbued with the wisdom of Seto farming women and some most modern crafty tips. Here Kriisa Farm’s garden produce is turned into home-style fare. The menu includes traditional dishes – thick porridge-like stew, cold soured milk-based soup, carrot stuffed pastries, sõir cheese – and a number of surprises. Just as we blend Seto culture and romantic lace, foods from our grandmothers’ time are made modern.
While the adults wait for their food under the apple trees, the kids can swing, play and feed the chickens. The story of Kriisa Farm will be told, a farm handicraft exhibition will be open and there will be an opportunity to try one’s hand at weaving on a loom. Leelo singing and instrumental music outside in the yard.
Various preserves and farm products can be purchased to take home.
Awaken your childhood summer memories !
