Värska sanatorium

Sanatooriumi tee 4, Rõsna, Setomaa vald, 64034

Värska was recognized as a health resort in 1971 due to the extensive resources of mineral water and lake mud that had been found in the area, as well as because of the beautiful pine forests. The first patients were welcomed in May 1980. The first mud therapy center was located in the town of Värska. The current sanatorium building was designed by Estonian architects Vilen Künnapuu and Ülevi Eljand, and opened in 1985.

In 2016 the sanatorium treatment building was rebuilt into a balneotherapy center. The most popular treatments provided by the center are therapeutic mud baths and mineral water baths. By the way, Värska is the only spa in the Baltic States where you can actually bathe in the mud. The mineral water and mud for the baths is taken straight from the Earth below.

The mineral water used in the therapeutic water baths is pumped from the Värska VI drilled well, which is the saltiest water that is especially rich in minerals. The mineral content is 17-21 grams per liter – that’s a lot! The bath helps to cure illnesses related to the nervous system, musculoskeletal system, skin diseases etc. This kind of water is also used for producing the unique mineral water spray Tsilk, which is the only nose spray produced in Estonia.
