Long ago in Lüübnitsa, a bright young man called Onion-Tsura lived peacefully, fishing by the lake and growing the best onions. One misty morning, he found a glowing golden egg under one of his hens. When approached, it sang a distant Seto leelo.

Word spread quickly. Some believed it was a gift from ancestors, others thought it was forest magic. But something big was surely coming...

When Onion-Tsura cracked the egg, a tiny grey bird with sparkling eyes emerged.
“I am the Eggbird,” it said. “I can only eat Seto food!”

So Onion-Tsura cooked all the best: sõir, karask, sour milk soup, and lots of eggs. Each time the Eggbird ate, it sang a beautiful song that drew crowds to every café it reached.

By Kostipäev, its song had spread across Setomaa, bringing joy, dancing, and feasting.

At sunset, the Eggbird thanked Onion-Tsura and flew back to the Land of Seto Dreams, leaving behind a magical Egg Tree. From it grew a new egg each day—each one inspiring a new dish or song.

Soon, other Seto cafés had their own magical eggs, creating unique flavors with a Seto heart.

And even today, if you hear a leelo in the air during Kostipäev… the Eggbird has returned.
